Feature Stories

As the assistant editor of the Georgia State University Magazine — an award-winning quarterly with more than 100,000 subscribers and an extensive web presence — I’ve written and edited stories about cold cases, drug addiction, historic buildings, archaeological collections, technology, athletes, musicians, and sculptors.

Here are some of my top bylines.

Law student Allie Armbruster (J.D. ’20) fought to overcome a decade of substance abuse that nearly killed her. Now she’s on a mission to transform our legal system’s approach to drug offenders — and save lives.

BLACKBEARD’S LOST PLUNDER

The legend of one of the most celebrated and fearsome pirates is more alive than ever, thanks in part to the ongoing recovery of his prized ship off the coast of North Carolina. For nearly two decades, Linda Carnes-McNaughton (B.A. ’75) has been analyzing the treasures found aboard the shipwreck of the Queen Anne’s Revenge — 400,000 of them and counting.

A DREAM MADE REAL

Master sculptor Martin Dawe (B.A. ’80) drew upon nearly 40 years of experience to create Georgia’s definitive statue of Martin Luther King Jr.

THE JAZZMAN

A storied trumpeter and crooner, part-time instructor Joe Gransden (B.Mu. ’94) is one of Clint Eastwood’s favorite musicians.

THE RENAISSANCE KID

Wunderkind Will Anderson (B.A., B.S. ’17) has been outdoing the world for years. At just 21, he’s a globetrotting archaeologist, published author, athlete, humanitarian, opera singer … who loves taking care of bones.
